Making Luck: A 2 Ingredient Recipe

January 28th 2020 in Uncategorized

There’s a quote attributed to the Roman philosopher Seneca:

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”

This quote has stood the (literal) test of time because most all of us have experienced luck in both ways described here. We’ve been at the right place at the right time and have been ready to act. We made our luck. Woo!

We have also been in the right place at the right time but not prepared. We made a regrettable memory. Ugh.

Opportunities are outside our control and often random. Sure, you can plan and act to improve your odds. Mostly the timing and placement of opportunities are beyond our pay grade.

Our hard work has to be poured into the Preparation part of the Luck game. We ‘do’ things every day, but they’re not always designed for preparedness.

So how do we know things will get us ready to take advantage of opportunities when they come around?

Easy, just answer the question “What do you want?”

Answering is often easier said than done, but worth the investment of attention. If you can decide what you want, you can start making choices and actions that will prepare you.

If you want to be lucky, you have a make an effort to be ready when it arrives.
